Propecia Development and Appearance on The Market

Modest beginnings

Propecia appeared on the market as a drug aimed to treat enlarged prostate glands in men, back in 1992. ADT Home Security . It was invented as a result of observations of sexual development in children as they matured. In some boys, a significantly smaller prostate together with the absence of male pattern baldness was found upon reaching adulthood. Further examination and research enabled discovering the hormonal compounds helped with prostate enlargement when isolated. Later it was noted that patients undergoing prostate glands treatment also showed improvement in hair loss. So the observations described above led to the development of the first-ever successful treatment for male pattern baldness.

Propecia FDA approval

FDA approved the drug initially in 1992, but only as designated for use in treating enlarged prostates. Only 5 years later hey officially endorsed its use for effectively treating hair loss. Since then, propecia is far and away the most effective prescription drug treatment available for stopping the procession of male pattern baldness, and also hair loss due to other causes. It is not however used for female hair loss either.

Alternative Prescription Treatments

In fact little other prescription treatment options for male pattern baldness exist. A treatment, showing signs of effectiveness in other countries, has not been yet approved for safe or effective use in US. One more option that have been tried comes in the form of a cream applied directly to the scalp, was originally aimed to treat psoriasis of the scalp. It has shown some good results in cases of very mild hair loss, but has not been officially by the FDA approved for use in treating baldness. Cortisone shots is another treatment sometimes prescribed. These are injected directly into the scalp on a monthly basis, or sometimes used as pills (cortisone), but their effectives differ too much and can cause harmful side effects. While these treatments show some degrees of effectiveness, many doctors do not like prescribing cortisone in cases of long-term use.

Propecia vs. Over-the-Counters

Since hair loss is rather widespread, there are little choices for effective treatment, a variety of creams, pills, and powders have sprung up trying to decoy the buyer. Remember none of these products has ever undergone systematic testing either for safety or effectiveness and not necessarily reliable. FDA approved propecia is truly the trustworthy option for those seeking effective hair loss treatment.
